Pakistan’s last military ruler Pervez Musharraf dies

The Pakistani military announced on Sunday that former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has passed away in Dubai after a protracted illness. He was 79 years old.

In a short statement, the military’s media arm announced that senior military leaders “offer profound condolences on the tragic death of General Pervez Musharraf.” “May Allah rest the departed soul in peace and comfort the family in their time of loss.”

AFP was told by a senior security official that the four-star general had passed away in a Dubai hospital early on Sunday morning.

An unnamed government source confirmed to AFP that the general had passed away in Dubai that morning.

In a bloodless coup in 1999, Musharraf took control when the prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, sought to remove him from his position as army leader. Sharif had nominated Musharraf over more senior officials the previous year.

As president, he led a period of economic development and survived at least three attempts on his life.
