Darwin, 03 September- China held a massive military parade at Tiananmen Square on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, using the occasion to demonstrate its growing military strength and global influence.

President Xi Jinping presided over the event, flanked by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — a highly symbolic display of geopolitical alignment.

The event featured thousands of uniformed troops marching in tight formation, as well as an impressive display of China’s latest military technology, including stealth fighter jets, advanced tanks, and long-range ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

According to a report by Qatar-based Al Jazeera, Xi Jinping began the ceremony by greeting foreign dignitaries.
Alongside Putin and Kim, leaders from various countries around the world were in attendance. He then exchanged greetings with senior veterans of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) before taking his place on the viewing platform.
In his address to nearly 10,000 personnel from the army, navy, and air force, President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to peace, despite its growing military capabilities.

“Humanity today once again stands at a crossroads between peace and war, dialogue and conflict,” Xi said.

“The Chinese people will always stand on the right side of history, on the side of human progress. We will follow the path of peaceful development and work hand in hand with the world to build a shared future for mankind.”

Dressed in a grey Mao suit, Xi later toured Tiananmen Square in an open-top vehicle, greeting soldiers before the parade formally commenced along Beijing’s main thoroughfare, Chang’an Avenue.

Among the most eye-catching elements of the parade was the DF-5 intercontinental ballistic missile, capable of carrying a nuclear payload — a symbol of China’s strategic deterrence power.

Political analyst Ian Chong of the National University of Singapore remarked that the parade served as a bold statement of China’s global ambitions under Xi Jinping’s leadership.
“Through this parade, Xi wants to send a clear message: under his leadership, China has emerged as a global superpower,” said Chong. “The presence of world leaders demonstrates that China cannot be isolated and that it is unafraid of pressure or intimidation from the US or any other power.”
