PERTH : A 20-year-old man accused of a “one-punch” style assault that left high-profile mining executive and former WA Labor Secretary Tim Picton in an induced coma has been released on bail.
Brodie Jake Dewar appeared in court today charged with grievous bodily harm following the incident in Northbridge during the early hours of Saturday morning.
Picton, 36, was struck by a stranger on James Street, causing him to fall and hit his head on the pavement. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. Police prosecutors informed the court there is a “high chance” Mr. Picton will suffer a lifelong disability as a result of the injuries.
In court, Mr. Dewar’s defense lawyer argued that the incident followed a confrontation, alleging that Mr. Picton had been harassing Mr. Dewar’s cousin and had ignored multiple requests to leave her alone.
The Picton family, including Tim’s brother South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton—released a statement today describing Tim as a “much-loved father, husband, brother, and son.”
“We are focused entirely on being with him and supporting one another,” the statement read. “We thank the first responders and medical staff for their incredible work.”
WA Premier Roger Cook also offered his support, stating the entire Labor team is “thinking of him” during this critical time. Mr. Dewar was supported in court by his family and will return to face the charges at a later date.
