Darwin, 07 July : Local Australian rules footballer and school teacher Nathan Fitzgerald has died after suffering a catastrophic head injury during a match in Melbourne.
The 27-year-old was playing for Epping Football Netball Club on Saturday at Lalor Recreation Reserve when he was involved in a freak collision while attempting a tackle. He reportedly collided with a teammate before sustaining another impact and striking his head on the synthetic cricket pitch in the middle of the ground.
Medical staff from both teams and paramedics treated Fitzgerald at the scene for nearly an hour, performing CPR before he was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital. Despite undergoing emergency brain surgery, he later died from his injuries.
Fitzgerald was a respected player at Epping Football Netball Club and worked as a mathematics and science teacher at Mernda Central College. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from teammates, students, colleagues and the wider football community.
The tragedy has also renewed debate over the safety of synthetic cricket pitches installed on multi-use sporting grounds across Australia.
