At least 31 people have died in a stampede at a rally of Tamil superstar and regional political party Tamilaga Vaethri Kazhagam (TVK) president Thalapathy Vijay.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, India, according to the Hindustan Times.
The rally, part of Vijay’s state tour, had a massive gathering. Suddenly, chaos broke out in the crowd, causing many to lose consciousness. The injured were quickly taken to Karur Medical College Hospital and various nearby private hospitals.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian confirmed the death toll.
R. Shanthimala, Dean of Karur Medical College Hospital, said, “So far, seven adults and three children have died. New patients are still arriving, and ambulances are still reaching the hospital. It will take some more time to provide an accurate count.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the incident.
On social media platform X, he wrote, “The incident at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply tragic. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I urge them to stay strong in this difficult time. Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.”
