The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2025 has been jointly awarded to Mary E. Brunco, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking research on how the immune system is regulated.

According to the Nobel jury, the trio’s pioneering discoveries have revealed how the body’s immune response can be kept in balance, paving the way for new treatments against cancer and autoimmune diseases.

The announcement was made on Monday afternoon (Bangladesh time) at a ceremony held in Stockholm, Sweden. Mary E. Brunco and Fred Ramsdell are from the United States, while Shimon Sakaguchi hails from Japan.

The Nobel Committee said, “Their discoveries have laid the foundation for a new field of research that has not only deepened our understanding of immune regulation but also inspired the development of innovative therapies for complex diseases.”

This year’s Nobel announcements began with the Medicine Prize, presented by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. The rest of the week will feature other categories:

Physics – October 7

Chemistry – October 8
