Darwin, 08 October-  Bangladeshi photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam has been detained by Israeli forces while aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla. The information was confirmed by Alam himself through a video message posted on his official Facebook account.

In the video message released around 10:15 a.m. Bangladesh time on Wednesday, Alam said:

> “I am Shahidul Alam, a photographer and writer from Bangladesh. If you are watching this video, it means that we have been intercepted at sea and I have been kidnapped by the Israeli occupying forces — a country that, with the active cooperation and support of the United States and other Western powers, is committing genocide in Gaza.
I call upon all my colleagues and friends to continue the struggle for the freedom of Palestine.”

The video immediately sparked strong reactions and deep concern among human rights activists, artists, and social campaigners both in Bangladesh and abroad.

Mission and Background

Shahidul Alam was aboard a ship named “Conscience,” one of nine vessels participating in the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which set sail from Barcelona, Spain, on October 1. The mission aimed to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians under siege.

Confirmation of Detention

According to a report published by The Times of Israel, Israeli naval forces have intercepted and detained the latest aid flotilla bound for Gaza. The report stated that all passengers are safe and are in the process of being returned to their home countries.

The Israeli Navy reportedly launched the operation in the Mediterranean Sea on the morning of October 8, 2025, targeting one of the flotilla’s vessels. Israeli authorities said they had successfully “prevented another attempt to breach the lawful naval blockade of Gaza.” The detained ships and passengers are being taken to the Ashdod Port in Israel.

Official Israeli Statement

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote:

> “Another failed attempt to breach the legal naval blockade and enter a war zone has been thwarted. The ships and passengers are being brought to Israeli ports. All passengers are safe and in good health. They will be repatriated soon.”

Details of the Flotilla

Reports say the Freedom Flotilla Coalition consisted of nine vessels carrying around 100 activists and humanitarian workers. One of these vessels was Conscience (Bibek in Bengali), which departed from Italy nearly two weeks earlier.

Organizers of the flotilla said in a statement that their ship came under attack by Israeli military helicopters, while the remaining eight sailing boats were unlawfully intercepted and seized.
Video footage released by activists shows Israeli naval commandos boarding several vessels as part of the operation.
