The United States government remains in shutdown after the Senate once again failed to pass the federal budget bill — marking the fifth consecutive failure to approve the measure.
The bill required at least 60 votes in the Senate to pass, but President Donald Trump’s administration fell short of that threshold in its latest attempt.
Before the vote, Trump warned that another failure would lead to further mass layoffs. Since the shutdown began five days ago, thousands of federal employees have been placed on mandatory unpaid leave or instructed to work without pay.
The ongoing standoff stems from deep divisions between President Trump’s Republican government and former President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party. Democrats are demanding increased funding for their healthcare programs, while Republicans have repeatedly vetoed those proposals. In response, Democratic senators have withheld approval of the overall budget, prolonging the government paralysis.
However, Trump has recently hinted at a possible compromise. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, he wrote, “I am ready to work with the Democrats on their failed healthcare policy or anything else. But first, we must get our government running again. It must start tonight.”
The latest budget proposal excludes several key elements of the Democrats’ healthcare agenda. Democrats argue that the bill would hurt low-income Americans and have called for the restoration of health funding cuts made by the Trump administration. They also insist on maintaining subsidies for health insurance for low-income citizens.
