Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature for his visionary and deeply philosophical body of work that explores the complexities of human existence.

The Swedish Academy announced the decision in Stockholm on Thursday, praising Krasznahorkai’s “unique narrative style and his profound exploration of chaos, faith, and despair in the modern world.”

Krasznahorkai, 71, is best known for his novels Satantango, The Melancholy of Resistance, and War and War. His writing is characterized by long, flowing sentences, apocalyptic imagery, and intense psychological depth.

Born in Gyula, Hungary, in 1954, Krasznahorkai gained international recognition after filmmaker Béla Tarr adapted several of his works into critically acclaimed films, including Satantango and Werckmeister Harmonies.

In a brief statement following the announcement, Krasznahorkai said he was “deeply honored” and dedicated the prize to “all those who continue to search for meaning in an uncertain world.”

The Nobel Committee highlighted that his novels “capture the tension between despair and transcendence” and that his works “offer a timeless reflection on the fragility of civilization.”

Krasznahorkai joins the ranks of other Central European literary giants such as Imre Kertész and Olga Tokarczuk, both previous Nobel laureates.
