U.S. Renovates Abandoned Base Near Venezuela, Fears of Imminent Attack Grow

Darwin, November 4 — Amid escalating tensions with Venezuela, the United States has begun renovating an abandoned military base in Puerto Rico, located close to Venezuelan territory. Satellite images obtained by Reuters reportedly show active construction work at the site.

The report says that renovation work has resumed at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Base in Puerto Rico — a facility that had been inactive for over 20 years. Construction activity began suddenly on September 17, according to the satellite imagery, which shows cleared pathways and runway repairs underway.

At the same time, the U.S. is also expanding civilian airport infrastructure in Puerto Rico and on the island of St. Croix, part of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both areas are roughly 800 kilometers from Venezuela.

According to the Miami Herald, Washington has already drawn up operational plans for a potential strike on Venezuela, and military action could begin “within days, or even hours.”

The buildup of U.S. forces in the Caribbean has further strained relations between Washington and Caracas. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused U.S. President Donald Trump of using the so-called “war on drugs” as a pretext for launching the largest continental threat to South America in a century. Maduro warned that a U.S. ground invasion of Venezuela could soon follow.
