Typhoon Kalmaegi has left a trail of devastation across Southeast Asia, with the storm system battering the Philippines, Vietnam, and now moving into Cambodia.

The storm’s impact has been most severe in the Philippines, where it has been dubbed the deadliest natural disaster of the year. The Office of Civil Defence confirmed Kalmaegi left at least 188 people dead and 135 missing across the country.

In response to the catastrophic damage, President Ferdinand Marcos Junior declared a state of national emergency on Thursday. The declaration comes as the Philippines braces for another potentially powerful typhoon, expected to strike the western coast late Sunday or early Monday.

On Friday, Kalmaegi, which had weakened to a tropical storm, brought fierce winds and torrential rains to Vietnam. Areas in central Vietnam reported widespread damage, including:

  • Damaged buildings
  • Downed electricity poles
  • Fallen trees

Vietnamese state media confirmed two deaths related to the storm in Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces.

The storm is currently expected to move through Laos before eventually hitting north-east Thailand in the afternoon.
