Darwin, 11 November-— A powerful explosion near the historic Red Fort in India’s capital has left at least 13 people dead and 24 others injured on Monday evening, according to NDTV.
The blast occurred around 6:52 p.m on Monday local time near the Red Fort Metro Station when a Hyundai i20 car suddenly exploded. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, with bodies scattered across the road and several vehicles completely destroyed.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that the explosion took place in a slow-moving passenger car near the Red Fort traffic signal. “The car was carrying passengers. The explosion damaged several nearby vehicles,” he said. Police reported that a total of 22 cars were affected by the blast.
Authorities have launched an immediate investigation, with teams from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the National Security Guard (NSG) arriving at the scene. In response to the attack, high alerts have been issued in Mumbai, Jaipur, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
Images and videos from the site show charred vehicles and mutilated bodies lying across the street. Deputy Chief Fire Officer A.K. Malik said that emergency teams reached the spot quickly and brought the fire under control by 7:29 p.m.
Heavy police and security forces have since been deployed around the Red Fort area, one of India’s busiest tourist destinations. Panic has spread among residents and tourists, as the area is typically crowded throughout the year.
In a separate incident on the same day, security forces in Faridabad, about 50 kilometers from Delhi, recovered 2,900 kilograms of explosives, raising further concerns over coordinated attacks. The explosion also comes a day before the second phase of voting in Bihar’s state elections.
Built during the Mughal era, the Red Fort is located in Old Delhi and attracts thousands of tourists from across India and abroad every day.
According to reports, Home Minister Amit Shah briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation, while senior officials from the Delhi Police, NIA, and Intelligence Bureau continue to provide real-time updates.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed. NSG bomb disposal units remain at the site to investigate the type of explosive used.
Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged authorities to ensure a swift and transparent investigation. “The police and government must find the real cause of the explosion as soon as possible and inform the public. Any negligence in Delhi’s security will not be tolerated,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and horror. One man told NDTV he saw “human body parts flying through the air” as the explosion ripped through the vehicle. “The sound was so loud my ears hurt for minutes,” he said. Another witness reported that nearby buildings shook violently, with walls, windows, and doors rattling from the blast.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, and investigations are ongoing.
