Darwin, 07 December: A fire at a nightclub in Goa, a coastal state in western India, has claimed the lives of 23 people, including tourists and club employees. The incident occurred around midnight on Saturday.

According to reports from the Indian Express, quoting the BBC, the fire broke out at a nightclub named “Barch by Romeo Lane,” located in the northern district of Arpora near Baga Beach, one of Goa’s most popular coastal areas.

The fire originated from the nightclub’s kitchen, where a gas cylinder exploded, causing the flames to spread rapidly.

Police officials from the state have reported that most of the bodies were found in and around the kitchen area, and it is believed that many of the victims were employees of the club. A few tourists’ bodies were also recovered, but their identities have not yet been confirmed.

By Sunday morning, the fire had been brought under control by the fire services. After the flames were contained, the Director General of Police for the state, Alok Kumar, told reporters that “the fire was primarily confined to the kitchen and the first floor of the club. Most of the recovered bodies were found in the kitchen and surrounding areas, suggesting that most of the victims were staff members of the club. Some bodies of tourists were also found, possibly 3 to 4, but their identities have not yet been established.”

The rescue operations were expected to continue through Sunday morning, Kumar added.

In the wake of the tragic incident, Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, expressed his condolences, stating that it was a deeply sorrowful day for the residents of Goa. He confirmed that an investigation had already begun to determine the cause of the fire. Sawant further emphasized that those responsible for the negligence leading to the disaster would be held accountable.

In his statement, Sawant said, “Today is a very tragic day for all the residents of Goa. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. This is an irreparable loss for them. The state government has already initiated an investigation into the incident, and anyone found responsible for the negligence leading to this tragedy will be brought to justice.”
