All crew members of a military transport aircraft that crashed in the eastern part of Russia’s capital, Moscow, have been killed, the country’s Investigative Committee confirmed on Tuesday.
Citing the state news agency TASS, The Moscow Times reported on Tuesday that the aircraft had seven crew members on board. However, no official number has yet been released.
According to a statement from the Investigative Committee, the AN-22 model aircraft crashed near the village of Ivankovo during a test flight on 9 December 2025.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense said the aircraft had taken off for a test flight following recent repair work. Rescue teams reached the site immediately after the crash, and an investigation has begun.
The Ivanovo region is located about 200 kilometers east of Moscow.
Initially, the incident is not believed to be linked to the Ukraine war in any way. The newspaper Kommersant reported that the more than 50-year-old aircraft was likely brought down by a technical malfunction.
In the context of the four-year-long Ukraine war, accidents involving Russian military transport and equipment have increased compared to previous years.
Observers believe that heightened military activity and the intensive use of equipment have made such incidents more frequent.
