Darwin, 14 December: A shooting incident has taken place at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Police say at least two people have been killed and several others injured. The injured have been taken to hospitals, but their conditions are not yet known.
According to The Guardian, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon near the Barus and Holley Building on campus. The seven-story building houses laboratories, offices, and classrooms for the Engineering and Physics departments. It was the second day of final exams, so many students were present on campus.
At 4:30 p.m., the university issued an alert stating:
“An active shooter is present. Lock doors, silence phones, and hide. If you can escape, do so. If you cannot, hide, and as a last resort, defend yourself.”
Initially, authorities said one suspect had been detained, but this information was later corrected as inaccurate. Police are currently searching for one or more suspects. Everyone has been advised to remain in safe locations and avoid the affected area.
The Providence Police Department and the FBI are investigating the incident. University authorities are in contact with the families of the injured and are providing assistance.
