Darwin, 14 December: Australian police have detained two people following reports of gunfire at Sydney’s world-famous Bondi Beach. The incident occurred on Sunday (December 14) local time, prompting a major emergency response and authorities urging the public to avoid the area.
New South Wales Police said they were responding to an “ongoing and serious situation” at Bondi Beach. People at the scene were instructed to take shelter, follow police directions and not cross established police cordons.
Police confirmed that two suspects were taken into custody and that the operation remains ongoing. However, no details about the identities of those arrested have been released.
Australian media outlet The Sydney Morning Herald reported that one suspected gunman was shot by police while another was arrested, though police have not officially confirmed this information.
Emergency services said multiple people were injured in the incident. A spokesperson for the New South Wales Ambulance Service told AFP that at least eight people were taken to hospitals across Sydney after receiving treatment at the scene. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that the number of people transported to hospital could be as high as 13.
