Darwin, 21 December: Diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine are gaining fresh momentum, with Russian President Vladimir Putin signaling readiness to meet a European leader for the first time since the conflict began.
In an interview with Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti on Sunday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said President Putin is prepared to hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and expressed a positive attitude toward dialogue.
“Such initiatives are viewed positively when there is mutual political will,” Peskov said, indicating openness to renewed diplomatic engagement.
Earlier this week, President Macron said that Europe should reopen channels of communication with Moscow if the war in Ukraine is to be brought to an end. He stressed that it is in the interests of both Europe and Ukraine to quickly establish a suitable framework for negotiations.
While Russia has continued discussions with the United States over the war, it has so far not held talks with any European leader on ending the conflict. A potential meeting between Putin and Macron would therefore mark a significant shift in diplomatic dynamics.
In mid-2025, Russian and Ukrainian representatives held brief direct talks in Istanbul aimed at reaching a peace agreement. However, the discussions ended without any major breakthrough. European leaders were involved as representatives or mediators, but Putin did not directly engage in talks with European counterparts at that time.
As the war enters its fourth year, the European Union has taken major steps to ease Ukraine’s economic pressure. On Friday, EU leaders agreed in principle to provide Ukraine with up to €90 billion in loans to help address potential budget shortfalls.
However, disagreements remain among EU member states over whether frozen Russian assets should be used to fund this support package.
The prospect of direct talks between Putin and Macron is being closely watched, as it could signal a new phase in international efforts to bring the prolonged conflict to an end.
