MOSCOW : A high-ranking Russian military official has been killed after an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle in southern Moscow on Monday morning.
The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov, 56, died in the hospital from injuries sustained in the blast. Sarvarov served as the head of the operational training department for the Russian Armed Forces, a critical role in the country’s military infrastructure.
The Incident The explosion occurred in a residential car park near an apartment block. Images from the scene depict a white vehicle with its doors blown out and significant structural damage. Investigators have launched a criminal probe into murder and the illegal trafficking of explosives.
Investigation and Allegations Russian officials have pointed toward a potential “Ukrainian trace” in the assassination. “One theory being investigated is that the bomb was planted with the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services,” the Investigative Committee stated.
While Ukraine has not commented on the incident, the assassination follows a pattern of targeted attacks against military leadership within the Russian capital since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
A Career in Conflict Sarvarov was a veteran of several major Russian military campaigns. His service record included combat operations in the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and both Chechen wars. More recently, he played a prominent role in leading operations in Syria between 2015 and 2016.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was informed of the death immediately.
