China Slams US Strike on Venezuela at UN Emergency Session

UNITED NATIONS : China has issued a blistering condemnation of the United States following the large-scale military operation in Venezuela, labeling the capture of President Nicolás Maduro an act of “unilateral bullying” that threatens global security.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, Sun Lei, the charge d’affaires of China’s Permanent Mission to the UN, stated that Beijing was “deeply shocked” by the events of January 3.

Sun Lei detailed the “blatant” assault which saw U.S. forces seize President Maduro and his wife by force and remove them from the country. China is now formally calling for their immediate release and a guarantee of their personal safety.

“The United States has placed its own power above multilateralism and military actions above diplomatic efforts,” Sun told the Council. “China firmly opposes this, and we urge the United States to return to the path of political solutions through dialogue.”

The Chinese envoy argued that the U.S. has “wantonly trampled” on Venezuela’s sovereignty as an independent state. Sun asserted that the military strikes—and the subsequent U.S. claim that it would “run” the country—constitute a serious violation of the UN Charter, specifically the principles of non-interference and the prohibition of the use of force.

Beijing’s representative used the platform to reject the concept of American exceptionalism in international law. “No country can act as the world’s police, nor can any country presume to be the international judge,” Sun remarked.

He concluded by reaffirming China’s support for the Venezuelan people in safeguarding their national dignity and warned that “indiscriminate use of force will only lead to greater crises,” citing historical precedents in Iraq and Iran.
