Darwin, 21 January: For the past several days, U.S. President Donald Trump has been trying to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. He has said that if Greenland is not handed over to the United States through diplomacy, force may also be used. In addition, for obstructing his ambition, he has imposed a 10 percent tariff on goods from eight European countries.

In this situation, European leaders have been trying to communicate with Trump. They have been sending him private messages.

French President Emmanuel Macron also sent such a private message to Trump, which Trump made public on January 19. In addition, yesterday, Tuesday, January 20, he also published a message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

What Macron wrote

On the social media platform Truth, Trump shared an image of the message sent by Macron.
The message reads:

“My dear friend (Trump),

We are on the right path on Syria.

We can do something extraordinary on Iran.

But I do not understand what you are doing with Greenland.

Let us try to build something good—

After the Davos Economic Forum, I can host a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday. I can invite the Ukrainians, Danes, Syrians, and Russians to attend.

Before returning from Davos on Thursday, let us have dinner together in Paris.”

What the NATO chief wrote

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also expressed interest in discussing Greenland with Trump.

In his message to Trump, he wrote:

“Mr. President, dear Donald—what you have achieved in Syria today is remarkable. Through the media, I will highlight your work in Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine. I am committed to finding a solution on Greenland. I am looking forward to meeting you. Yours, Mark.”
