Darwin, 06 February: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that around 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the ongoing war with Russia. He made the statement during an interview with a French television channel.
Zelensky also noted that a significant number of Ukrainian citizens are officially listed as missing, reflecting the heavy human cost of the prolonged conflict.
Both Ukraine and Russia regularly publish their own estimates of casualties, though neither side provides complete or independently verified figures. International observers believe the overall death toll from both sides runs into the hundreds of thousands.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to end the war are continuing. The conflict, which began in February 2022, has prompted renewed international initiatives aimed at securing a ceasefire and reaching a political settlement.
Despite these efforts, major obstacles remain. Russia maintains control over parts of eastern Ukraine and has insisted that territorial concessions are necessary for any peace agreement, a condition Kyiv continues to reject.
