Darwin, 25 February:
The third round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran is set to take place on Thursday in Geneva, Switzerland. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has said that a nuclear agreement is “within reach” if diplomatic compromise is achieved.
According to a report by Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera, Foreign Minister Araghchi wrote in a social media post that, beyond easing mutual concerns, there is an opportunity to sign an excellent agreement that preserves the bilateral interests of both sides.
He further stated, “The deal is fully within our reach; however, it will only be possible if diplomatic matters are given priority.”
An AFP report noted that the talks are being held amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. The United States has already deployed a large number of troops to the region and President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Iran if no agreement is reached.
Meanwhile, Iran has also remained firm. The country has repeatedly stated that it will respond strongly to any level of aggression. On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that even limited strikes would be considered acts of aggression. “We have already proven that nothing can stop us from courageously defending our sovereignty,” it said.
Last year, Iran and the United States held five rounds of talks over the nuclear issue. However, no success was achieved due to the war triggered by Israel’s surprise attack on Iran. During the 12-day conflict, the United States also participated in airstrikes against Iran.
During that time, Iran launched drone and missile attacks on Israel. Iran also carried out an attack on a U.S. military base in Qatar.
