Darwin, 17 March:
Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Moscow after being injured in a U.S.-Israeli attack. According to a report by Kuwait-based news outlet Al-Jarida, he was sent to Moscow at the personal invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The report states that Putin spoke with Mojtaba Khamenei over the phone on Thursday, March 12, after which Mojtaba traveled to Moscow the same day aboard a Russian military aircraft.
Al-Jarida contacted the Kremlin for comment, but officials declined to respond. Russian news agency TASS also reached out to the Kremlin for details. In response, Putin’s press secretary said, “We never comment on such reports.”
On February 28, the first day of the Iran–U.S.–Israel conflict, Mojtaba’s father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed. His wife, daughter, grandson, and Mojtaba’s wife were also reportedly killed in the same attack, while Mojtaba himself was injured.
Following Ayatollah Khamenei’s death, Mojtaba was selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader. Several American media outlets reported that he was seriously wounded in the attack.
However, multiple Iranian sources claim that his injury is limited to his leg and is not life-threatening.
It is worth noting that Russia is a close ally of Iran. In 2024, the two countries signed a strategic partnership agreement.
