Iran Launches Missile Strike Toward Diego Garcia Base

Darwin, 21 March: Iran has launched two medium-range ballistic missiles targeting the British-American joint military base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

This move came shortly after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer authorized US forces to use British bases to carry out strikes against Iran.

According to the Iranian news agency Mehr, cited by BBC, the missiles were fired toward the Chagos Archipelago. However, neither of the missiles successfully hit its intended target.

Meanwhile, The Wall Street Journal reported that one missile destroyed a US warship, while the other failed mid-air due to a mechanical malfunction.

The incident has drawn significant attention from military analysts, particularly due to Iran’s demonstrated capability. The distance between Iran and Diego Garcia is approximately 4,000 kilometers.

Previously, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had claimed that the country’s missile range was limited to 2,000 kilometers.

This attempted strike indicates that Iran’s missile system may now be far more advanced, with the capability to hit targets at much greater distances than previously acknowledged.

The United Kingdom has strongly condemned the attack. In a statement, the British Ministry of Defence described it as “reckless.”

In response to the escalating conflict and rising cost-of-living pressures, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for an emergency “COBRA” meeting next week.

Why is Diego Garcia so important?

Located in the remote Chagos Archipelago, Diego Garcia has become a focal point in global geopolitics. Under British control since 1814, the island’s proximity to South Asia makes it strategically vital.

From this base, rapid military operations can be conducted across South Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. Currently, around 2,500 military personnel are stationed there, most of them American.

The airbase supports long-range US bombers such as the B-52 Stratofortress and B-1 Lancer, capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

Historically, Diego Garcia has been a cornerstone of Western military power. It played a major role in operations during the Vietnam War, as well as in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Amid rising tensions with Iran, the base has once again become a critical hub for US military operations in the region.
