Darwin, 28 March: Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has accused Russia of helping Iran identify targets for attacks.

He claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to use tensions in the Middle East to divert global attention away from Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the G7 meeting in France, Wadephul said he had conveyed Germany’s position during talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

He also noted that Germany is interested in playing a role in maintaining stability in the Strait of Hormuz once the current tensions ease.

Wadephul added, “Putin is cynically hoping that tensions in the Middle East will distract from his crimes in Ukraine. This calculation must not succeed. We can clearly see how closely these two conflicts are linked. Russia is evidently assisting Iran by providing information on potential targets.”
