US A-10 Warthog Shot Down by Iranian Fire

Darwin, 04 April:

Another United States Air Force warplane has been brought down in the Persian Gulf region. Earlier, another aircraft was also shot down over western Iran. Although the US claims to have full control over Iranian airspace, recent events suggest significant risks remain for its operations there.

According to US and Iranian officials cited by Reuters, two pilots have been rescued, while one crew member remains missing.

This comes amid claims by US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that Iran’s drone and missile capabilities had been “completely destroyed.” Despite assertions of air superiority, the downing of two US warplanes indicates continued vulnerability for US and Israeli forces in the region.

The first incident involved a two-seat US F-15E fighter jet, which officials from both countries confirmed was shot down by Iranian fire.

In a second incident, an A-10 “Warthog” aircraft was damaged by an Iranian attack and later crashed over Kuwaiti airspace. The pilot successfully ejected and was subsequently rescued, according to two US officials.

The A-10 Warthog is a highly durable and iconic close air support aircraft used by the US Air Force. It is specifically designed for anti-tank missions and to support ground troops, and is well known for its powerful GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon and ability to withstand heavy damage.

Meanwhile, two Black Hawk helicopters participating in a search operation for the missing F-15E crew member also came under Iranian fire. However, they managed to exit Iranian airspace safely, officials told Reuters.

There is still no clear information regarding the condition of the injured, and the status of the missing F-15E crew member remains unknown.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched search operations in southwestern Iran, where the aircraft is believed to have gone down. The governor of the region has reportedly announced rewards for capturing or killing “enemy personnel.”

Amid the ongoing conflict, which has lasted for more than a month, some Iranian civilians have been celebrating news of the downed US aircraft on social media.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on social media that the war by the US and Israel has shifted from a “regime change effort” to a mission focused on recovering pilots.

A senior US administration official said the president is closely monitoring the latest developments in the rescue operation. However, the Pentagon and US Central Command have not issued any immediate comment.
