Legendary Indian Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away

Darwin, 12 April : Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle has passed away. She was 92 years old at the time of her death.

Indian media outlet NDTV confirmed the news of her death in a report on Sunday.

Asha Bhosle had been seriously ill and was admitted to the hospital. She was taken to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday.

Over a vibrant career spanning more than eight decades, Asha Bhosle established herself as one of the most versatile and unparalleled artists in Indian music. From classical and folk to pop and ghazals, her magical voice captivated millions of listeners. She lent her voice to thousands of songs in numerous languages both in India and abroad.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to music, she received India’s highest film honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the country’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. Alongside multiple National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards, she was also nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards in 1997.

A member of the renowned Mangeshkar family, Asha Bhosle was the sister of the famous Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar.

She was born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli (now in Maharashtra), into a musical family. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a Marathi-speaking member of the Gomantak Maratha community and a classical musician as well as a stage actor.

Her first song was ‘Chala Chala Nav Bala’ from the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943).
