Australia’s First Female Army Chief Susan Coyle

A major reshuffle has taken place in the Australian Defence Force leadership. On Monday, Australia announced that for the first time in its history, a woman will lead the Australian Army.

The government said in a statement that Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, currently serving as Chief of Joint Capabilities, will become the Army Chief in July. She will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement, “From July, for the first time in the 125-year history of the Australian Army, we will have a female Army Chief.” Defence Minister Richard Marles described Coyle’s appointment as a “historic moment.”

He said, “Susan’s achievement will be very important for women currently serving in the Australian Defence Force. It will also be a major inspiration for those considering joining in the future.”

Coyle, 55, joined the army in 1987 and has held several senior command positions. Marles said, “She will be the first woman to lead any service branch of the military.”

Women currently make up about 21 percent of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), while they hold 18.5 percent of senior leadership roles. The ADF aims to increase overall female participation to 25 percent by 2030.

Coyle’s appointment comes as the military seeks to increase the number of women in its ranks. The ADF has faced ongoing allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination.

In October, a lawsuit was filed against the ADF alleging that the organisation had systematically failed to protect thousands of female personnel from sexual abuse, harassment, and discrimination.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the government also appointed Vice Admiral Mark Hammond, the current Navy Chief, as the new Chief of the Australian Defence Force.

He will replace Admiral David Johnston, while Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley, currently Deputy Chief of Navy, will take over as head of the Navy.
