Darwin, 15 April: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Italy has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of its defense cooperation agreement with Israel.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the decision on Tuesday (April 14), according to Reuters.
Speaking to Italian media in Verona, Meloni said the government had taken the step considering the current situation in the Middle East. She noted that the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel would be put on hold under present circumstances.
A source from Italy’s Defense Ministry said the decision means Italy will no longer engage in military training cooperation with Israel going forward.
The source also confirmed that the decision was made following a meeting on Monday involving Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.
The move reflects growing concern within Italy over the ongoing situation in the Middle East and signals a shift in its defense stance toward Israel.
