Darwin, 22 April : A widely circulated image and video showing an Israeli soldier striking a statue of Jesus Christ with a hammer in southern Lebanon has triggered international condemnation and a wave of political reaction, particularly in the United States.

The Israeli military has confirmed the authenticity of the footage and said it is investigating the incident, describing the soldier’s behaviour as inconsistent with expected military values.

Israeli response: apology and investigation

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was:

“stunned and distressed”

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar issued an apology, saying:

“We apologize for this incident and for every Christian who was harmed.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the case is being treated “with utmost seriousness” and confirmed disciplinary action will be taken. The army also said it is working with local Christian communities to restore the statue.

US political reaction: sharp criticism from MAGA figures

The incident has become a flashpoint in US political discourse, especially among right-wing and former Trump-aligned figures.

Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said:

“‘Our greatest ally’ that takes hundreds of billions of our tax dollars and weapons every year.”

Commentator Tucker Carlson said:

“You would never know it from the corporate media in the United States, but incidents like this are not rare,”

He further added: “The Israeli government has allowed its soldiers to behave like barbarians for decades while continuing to receive massive funding from the United States. The only difference between now and the past is that social media exposes it to the world,”

Former Congressman Matt Gaetz described the footage as: “Horrifying”

Ideological divide widening in Washington

The incident has intensified debate within conservative and Republican circles over US military aid to Israel and the strength of the bilateral alliance.

Some commentators aligned with the MAGA movement argue the episode reflects broader concerns about accountability and US foreign aid policy.

Analysts note that public support for Israel in the United States has declined in recent polling, adding political pressure on lawmakers already divided over Middle East policy.

Human rights groups and advocacy response

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for US intervention, stating:

“For years our government has ignored and enabled Israeli attacks on churches and Christians in Lebanon, Gaza and elsewhere,”

It further warned

“Our message to US officials is simple: if you continue sending weapons and political support for Israel’s reckless actions, you are responsible for what you see in this image.”

Wider context

The controversy comes amid ongoing conflict in Lebanon and Gaza, where religious sites and civilian infrastructure have repeatedly been damaged during military operations, drawing international concern.

Religious leaders and rights groups say the incident reflects a broader pattern of escalating tensions and repeated damage to Christian symbols and places of worship in conflict zones.
