Darwin, 02 May : At least 14 members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in a powerful explosion while attempting to remove unexploded ordnance in the country’s northwest, according to local reports.
The incident took place in Zanjan province, where a team was working to safely dispose of leftover munitions that had failed to detonate earlier. During the operation, the ordnance suddenly exploded, causing multiple casualties among the personnel involved.
Unexploded ordnance, often remnants of previous military activities, can remain highly unstable and may detonate unexpectedly even after long periods.
Authorities regularly carry out operations to neutralize such threats, though the process is extremely risky.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene following the blast, and an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Officials have not yet released further details.
The incident underscores the ongoing dangers posed by unexploded military materials and the risks faced by those tasked with clearing them.
