Darwin, 02 May: Donald Trump posted a modified map on his social media platform, Truth Social, renaming the crucial waterway, the Strait of Hormuz, to the “Trump Strait.” The map was initially posted by an account named “IStandWithTrump47” and later shared by Trump himself. The post did not include any caption.
The Strait of Hormuz is a significant global shipping route, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes. The region has been in heightened tension due to escalating relations between the United States and Iran, with concerns that a U.S. naval blockade could last for several months.
This isn’t the first time Trump has referred to the waterway as the “Trump Strait.” Back on March 27, while urging Iran to reopen the passage, Trump mentioned this term. Speaking at the “FI Priority Investment Forum” in Miami, he said, “They [Iran] need to open the Trump Strait, meaning Hormuz.” He quickly corrected himself, joking, “Sorry, I made a terrible mistake. The media will love that.”
Trump’s post came at a time when he had warned that the U.S. could maintain the naval blockade of Iran for several more months. Following these warnings, oil prices surged to their highest levels in four years on global markets.
