Darwin, 07 May : A close aide of Indian BJP leader was shot dead in what investigators believe was a carefully planned attack in India’s West Bengal state.
The victim, Chandranath Rath, who worked closely with the senior BJP leader, came under attack on Wednesday night in the Doharia area of Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district. According to police sources, several armed attackers intercepted his vehicle and opened fire multiple times.
Rath sustained critical injuries in the shooting and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors later declared him dead. Another person travelling with him, identified as Buddhadeb Bera, was also injured in the attack.
Investigators suspect the assailants had been monitoring Rath’s movements before carrying out the ambush. Preliminary findings suggest around 10 to 12 attackers may have been involved in the operation. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and conducting raids to identify those responsible.
The killing has triggered strong political reactions in West Bengal. BJP leaders alleged the murder was politically motivated, pointing to Rath’s active role in recent political activities linked to Suvendu Adhikari.
However, police have not officially confirmed any political angle behind the murder, and no arrests had been reported at the time of writing.
