Iran Sends Formal Response to Latest US Peace Proposal

Darwin, 10 May : Iran has formally responded to the latest US proposal for a peace agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between the two countries. The written response was delivered through Pakistani mediators, though the contents of Tehran’s reply were not immediately disclosed.

A source familiar with the matter told Iran’s state news agency IRNA on Sunday that Tehran had sent its response. Quoting IRNA, news agency AFP reported that “Iran today sent its response to the latest US proposal through Pakistani mediators.”

The United States and Iran have exchanged several rounds of proposals in recent weeks as part of efforts to formally end the war, but the two sides have so far failed to reach an agreement.

Last week, Washington sent Tehran a 14-point proposal and had expected a response by Friday. However, no reply was delivered within the anticipated timeframe.

Amid the diplomatic deadlock, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated again from Thursday, with forces from both sides engaging in scattered confrontations in the strategic waterway.

On Friday, the United States claimed it had disabled two Iranian-flagged tankers, while Iran on the same day said it had seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman.

The conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Tehran retaliated with strikes on Israel and on several US military bases across the Middle East.

After 40 days of fighting, Iran and the United States agreed to a temporary ceasefire on April 8 through Pakistani mediation.

Senior officials from both countries later held nearly 21 hours of talks in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, but the meeting ended without a breakthrough. Discussions are continuing over arranging a second round of negotiations.
