Darwin, 15 May: At least 111 people have been killed and 72 others injured due to severe hailstorms, heavy rainfall, and lightning strikes in India’s Uttar Pradesh state.
The casualties occurred across 25 districts between Wednesday and Thursday morning, according to the office of the state Relief Commissioner Rishikesh Bhaskar Yashod.
The highest number of deaths was reported in Prayagraj, where 21 people died. Other affected districts include Mirzapur with 19 deaths, Sant Ravidas Nagar with 16, and Fatehpur with 11 fatalities.
Authorities also reported the death of 170 livestock animals and damage to 227 houses across the state, according to Hindustan Times.
The Relief Commissioner said the situation is being continuously monitored through the Integrated Control and Command Centre, which is tracking updates from different districts.
A dramatic incident was reported from Bhamora area in Bareilly district, where a resident of Babiana village, Nanhe Ansari, was reportedly lifted nearly 50 feet into the air by strong winds while clinging to a tin roof. He later fell into a cornfield and suffered serious injuries. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep concern over the storm-related damage and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He directed officials to immediately begin relief operations.
District magistrates have been instructed to carry out rescue and relief efforts in their respective areas, along with providing financial assistance to families affected by lightning and hailstorms.
A state government spokesperson said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also ordered officials to visit affected areas, assist victims, and ensure compensation is delivered promptly.
