Darwin, May 16: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz “free, open and secure” during a meeting with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

At the same time, Modi criticized Iran’s attack on the United Arab Emirates, calling it “unacceptable,” and pledged India’s support to the Gulf nation during the ongoing crisis, according to Indian media reports.

Modi made the remarks during a brief stopover in the UAE on Friday (May 15) before embarking on a four-country tour of Europe.

The Indian prime minister departed from Delhi on Friday morning and arrived in the UAE later in the day, where he stayed for less than three hours.

The Middle East has witnessed growing instability over the past two months due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

During his meeting with the UAE leader, Modi reaffirmed India’s full support for efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.

He also praised the UAE president for showing “courage and wisdom” during the crisis and thanked him for taking care of the Indian community living in the UAE “like family.”

Highlighting the global impact of the conflict, Modi reiterated that India has consistently supported dialogue and diplomacy as the path toward resolving tensions.

The two leaders also reviewed the progress of their comprehensive strategic partnership during the meeting.

Notably, Modi had met Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi just a day before his UAE visit.
