Darwin, 20 May : Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on a state visit on Tuesday night, just four days after U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to the country. At a time when global instability is rising due to the Iran war, the visits of two of the world’s most influential leaders to China have drawn significant international attention.
According to AFP, the aircraft carrying Putin landed at Beijing Capital International Airport at around 11:15 PM local time. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi received Putin and his delegation at the airport.
In a statement from the Kremlin, Putin’s official office, the visit was described as an opportunity to exchange views with Chinese President Xi Jinping on various international and regional issues.
China and Russia have deepened their diplomatic ties since 2022, following Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, which is still ongoing. Over the past four years, Moscow’s relations with the United States and its European allies have significantly deteriorated, while ties between Moscow and Beijing have grown closer.
According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, China-Russia relations are currently an example of one of the “most resilient and friendly” partnerships in the world.
Before arriving in Beijing, Putin also released a video message to the Chinese people, stating that China-Russia friendship has reached “unprecedented heights” and that bilateral trade between the two countries continues to expand.
Both Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping have repeatedly referred to each other as “long-time good friends.”
