Darwin, 27 May : Four Western European countries —Franc, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom are experiencing a record-breaking heatwave, with temperatures soaring to nearly 40°C and no immediate relief in sight.

In a forecast issued on Monday, France’s national weather agency, , warned that temperatures are unlikely to decline anytime soon.

The heatwave began last Thursday across the four countries. According to a report by AFP citing Météo-France, temperatures in the French capital, , have hovered near 35°C for the past four days, while some towns and rural areas across France recorded temperatures as high as 39°C.

In Portugal, temperatures have remained above 30°C for four consecutive days. Authorities have already issued yellow heat warnings in six districts of the country.

Spain has seen the worst of the heat concentrated in towns and cities near its northern coastline, where temperatures have remained around 34°C in recent days. Spain’s weather agency, , described the conditions as “abnormally high temperatures” and warned that the heatwave is expected to persist throughout the week.

The United Kingdom is also facing unusually hot weather, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C in several regions over the past four days.

Western Europe is traditionally known for its relatively cool climate, particularly in May, when temperatures in the region typically remain below 20°C.

Previously, the highest average May temperature recorded in these four countries was 32°C, set in May 1922. Until now, that figure had stood as the benchmark for record May heat in France, Spain, Portugal and the UK.
