Darwin, 15 June : Amid all uncertainties, the United States and Iran have finally agreed to a historic ceasefire deal. The peace agreement between the two countries will be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday (June 19).
According to Al Jazeera, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif officially announced the ceasefire via social media on Monday.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Sharif wrote:
“After intensive discussions, we are pleased to announce that the United States and Iran have successfully reached a peace agreement. Both sides have declared an immediate and permanent halt to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.”
He praised the goodwill of both the U.S. and Iran for this diplomatic breakthrough and also thanked the leadership of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their key mediating roles.
He further stated that technical-level talks between representatives of both countries will be held in Switzerland this week to prepare the framework for implementing the agreement.
Iran has stated that after the official memorandum is signed on Friday, a 60-day evaluation period will begin. During this time, Washington’s commitment will be assessed before final negotiations for a comprehensive agreement begin.
Quoting the Pakistani Prime Minister’s statement, Iranian state television announced that Iran and the United States had reached an agreement and that the U.S. had been compelled to sign a deal to end hostilities with the “Islamic Republic of Iran and the Resistance Front.” Some Iranian media outlets have described the agreement as a victory for Iran.
Meanwhile, following Pakistan’s announcement, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the ceasefire on his social media platform “Truth Social” and announced the lifting of a naval blockade on Iran.
In his message, Trump said:
“I am authorizing the complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz and ordering the immediate withdrawal of the U.S. naval blockade. All ships of the world, start your engines! Let the oil flow!”
However, differences can be seen between the statements of Trump and Shehbaz Sharif. While Trump described the agreement as finalized and effective, he did not clarify whether it had been formally signed by both sides. On the other hand, Pakistan stated that the official signing will take place on Friday.
According to political analysts, Trump’s sudden announcement and ceasefire order may be a response to recent Israeli strikes in Beirut, Lebanon.
It is also suggested that Trump’s firm stance reflects Washington’s determination to proceed with the agreement despite attempts by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to disrupt the peace process.
Meanwhile, a Qatari diplomatic delegation is currently present in Tehran, and extensive behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts are underway to finalize the agreement in Switzerland within the next four days.
