Darwin, 01 July : A brace from Kylian Mbappé and a record-equalling performance from Michael Olise powered France to a convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden, securing their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On a historic night, Mbappé became the highest scorer in World Cup knockout-stage history, while Olise matched a 32-year-old record by registering five assists in a single World Cup tournament.

In the Round of 32 knockout clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Didier Deschamps’ side dominated Sweden from the opening whistle. France controlled possession, created the better chances, and dictated the tempo throughout the match. Their dominance was finally rewarded in first-half stoppage time when captain Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 45th minute with a superb finish following a brilliant attacking move.

France returned from the break with even greater intensity. In the 53rd minute, Michael Olise produced a magnificent through ball from midfield, which Bradley Barcola controlled brilliantly before calmly finishing to double France’s lead. It was Barcola’s second goal of the tournament.

Mbappé struck again in the 74th minute, bursting through the Swedish defense on a rapid counterattack before finishing clinically to make it 3-0. The goal also saw the French superstar set a new all-time World Cup knockout-stage scoring record.

Before the match, Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo Nazário jointly held the record with eight knockout-stage goals each. Mbappé’s ninth knockout goal moved him clear at the top, making him the sole record holder.

His brace also took his tally to six goals at the 2026 World Cup, drawing him level with Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot race. Additionally, Mbappé now has 18 World Cup goals in his career, leaving him just one behind Messi’s all-time total of 19.

While Mbappé stole the headlines with his goals, Michael Olise was equally influential throughout the match. The French playmaker orchestrated almost every dangerous attack and provided the assist for Barcola’s goal, bringing his tournament tally to five assists. In doing so, he equalled the 32-year-old record set by German legend Thomas Hässler at the 1994 FIFA World Cup for the most assists in a single edition of the tournament.

Mbappé had a chance to complete his hat-trick late in the game, but Didier Deschamps substituted him in the 85th minute, replacing him with Jean-Philippe Mateta. By then, however, the outcome was already beyond doubt.

France comfortably sealed a 3-0 victory to book their place in the Round of 16. With Mbappé’s record-breaking goals, Olise’s creative brilliance, and another commanding team performance, Didier Deschamps’ side further strengthened their status as one of the leading contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
