Lionel Messi Ends His Epic International Career with a Goal and Two Assists
Darwin, October 07: Lionel Messi’s final match in international football, if this indeed was his last, was just like the man himself—filled with goals, assists, and…
Sports Desk: In a glittering ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday (October 26), Harry Kane was presented with football’s prestigious individual award, the Ballon d’Or. The 33-year-old English forward claimed the honour for the first time, finishing ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.
Kane’s triumph ended a 25-year wait for English football. Since Michael Owen won the award in 2001, no English player had claimed the men’s Ballon d’Or. Kane became only the fifth English footballer to receive the honour, following in the footsteps of Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owen.
But what enabled Kane to overcome star rivals such as Mbappé and Yamal and secure one of football’s most prestigious individual awards?

The answer goes beyond goals alone. His remarkable scoring ability during the 2025–26 season, team success with Bayern Munich, and leadership of England at the World Cup were three major factors behind his victory.
According to published figures from England Football, Kane scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country during the 2025–26 season. Of those, 61 came for Bayern Munich and 12 for England. His remarkable consistency in front of goal placed him in a strong position in the race for the award.
Kane won the Bundesliga, the German Cup (DFB-Pokal), and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup with Bayern Munich. His contribution went beyond individual scoring records; he also played a role in helping his team win trophies.
Kane led England to a third-place finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His six goals in the tournament strengthened his individual record while also contributing significantly to England’s campaign.
Looking at Kane solely as a goal machine would overlook much of his contribution. He keeps opposing defenders occupied, creates space for attacking teammates, and often drops deeper toward midfield to help build attacks and create scoring opportunities.

This versatility has made him more than a conventional number nine. He combines the instincts of a natural goalscorer with the ability to contribute to the wider attacking structure.
Nevertheless, the strongest arguments for his Ballon d’Or victory were his goal tally, consistency, and the trophies won alongside those individual performances.
Bayern Munich and England
With 73 goals, three trophies in Germany, and England’s third-place finish at the World Cup, Kane combined individual productivity with team success. That balance was one of his greatest strengths in the race for the award.
Real Madrid and France
Mbappé remained a formidable goalscorer with an impressive record on the international stage. However, in comparison with Kane, the balance of team trophies did not work as strongly in his favour.
Barcelona and Spain
Yamal attracted attention for his outstanding talent and influence in major matches. However, voters ultimately favoured Kane’s overall body of work across the season. Yamal also won the award for the best young player.
The key point is that the Ballon d’Or is not awarded solely to the player who scores the most goals. Voters consider individual excellence, team achievements, and a player’s overall impact throughout the season. In Kane’s case, these factors came together.
Kane left Tottenham Hotspur and joined Bayern Munich in 2023. Although he scored prolifically at Tottenham, major team trophies had remained elusive throughout much of his career. His situation changed after moving to Germany.
At Tottenham, Kane established himself as an exceptional goalscorer. At Bayern, he became a central figure in a team capable of winning major trophies. The combination of individual excellence and team success strengthened his case for an award such as the Ballon d’Or.
However, it would be inaccurate to attribute his success entirely to Bayern. The goalscoring ability, experience, and consistency he developed at Tottenham laid the foundation for his achievements.
The Ballon d’Or winner is selected through votes cast by international journalists. The decision is therefore not simply an automatic result of statistical rankings; it reflects an assessment of a player’s overall season.
Three arguments were particularly strong in Kane’s favour:
These achievements help explain why Kane emerged as the winner. However, there is no basis for claiming that every voter reached the same decision for precisely the same reasons.
Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph represents a landmark moment for English football. His season featured an extraordinary goal tally, trophies with Bayern Munich, and an important contribution to England’s World Cup campaign.
Taken together, these achievements helped him finish ahead of rivals such as Mbappé and Yamal.
Yet describing the award simply as a reward for scoring goals would tell only part of the story. It recognises a player who combined individual records with team success. As the fifth Englishman to win the men’s Ballon d’Or, Kane has also ended a 25-year wait and added a significant chapter to the history of English football.
