Spain End Argentina’s Dream, Win World Cup After 16 Years

Sports Desk: Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup champions for the second time in their history after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the 2026 final, denying Lionel Messi’s side back-to-back world titles.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, ending a tense and hard-fought contest at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Nico Williams headed a cross into Torres’ path, and the Barcelona forward made no mistake with the finish to break Argentina’s resistance.

The victory marked Spain’s first World Cup triumph since their historic 2010 success in South Africa, when Andrés Iniesta scored the winner against the Netherlands in extra time.

The defeat shattered Argentina’s hopes of defending the title they won in Qatar in 2022. It could also prove to be Lionel Messi’s final appearance in a World Cup.

The final brought together the reigning Copa América champions, Argentina, and the defending European champions, Spain. The two sides were originally scheduled to meet in the Finalissima earlier this year, but that match was cancelled due to conflict in the Middle East.

Spain controlled much of the game from the opening whistle. Lamine Yamal came close to giving his side an early lead in the fifth minute, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a fine save.

Despite dominating possession throughout the first half, Spain failed to find a breakthrough before the interval. The match also featured the first-ever halftime show in FIFA World Cup final history.

Spain continued to dictate play after the restart, while Argentina struggled to create meaningful chances. Argentina’s task became even more difficult in stoppage time of the second half when Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for fouling Pau Cubarsí.

Spain thought they had taken the lead in the 95th minute through Nico Williams, but the goal was ruled out for a foul. Another Torres strike in the 113th minute was also disallowed, although his earlier extra-time goal had already proved enough to separate the two teams.

Martínez kept Argentina in the match with a series of outstanding saves, but he could not prevent Torres’ winner. Argentina appeared to be aiming to take the final to a penalty shootout, as they had successfully done against France in the 2022 final, but Spain’s relentless pressure eventually paid off.

Spain finished the match with around 68 percent possession and registered 20 shots, including 11 on target. Argentina failed to record a shot on target during regulation time and only threatened late in extra time after falling behind.

Spain’s victory secured their second World Cup title and ended a 16-year wait to return to the summit of world football, while Argentina were left heartbroken in their bid to retain the trophy.
