Darwin, 21 July: Britain’s new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has wasted no time in reshaping his government, removing several close allies of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer from the Cabinet while outlining plans for a 10-year strategy aimed at reducing the cost of living and signaling a shift toward more left-leaning policies.

Burnham officially took office on Monday after succeeding Starmer at 10 Downing Street. His first actions included separate phone conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, followed by the announcement of a major Cabinet reshuffle, according to AFP.

Focus on Reindustrialisation and Economic Renewal

The 56-year-old prime minister pledged to reindustrialize Britain, expand the devolution of power, and end rough sleeping across the country. Following Starmer’s departure, Burnham formally assumed office after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace.

Burnham becomes the fourth prime minister to serve during King Charles III’s reign since his accession in 2022, and Britain’s seventh prime minister in just over a decade.

He said Britain must demonstrate to the world that it is capable of restoring “stability.”

Arriving at Downing Street with his wife, Marie-France van Heel, Burnham received a warm welcome from supporters, with his mother also present for the occasion.

In his first speech outside No. 10, he pledged to build “a new political model” and “a new economy” for the United Kingdom.

Calls With Trump and Zelenskyy

A Downing Street spokesperson said Burnham reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to defence and security during his first phone call with President Trump.

Trump later described the conversation as “very good” and said the two leaders would meet “very soon.”

Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “He has a big job ahead of him, but he’ll get it done. And, of course, the United States will be there to help.” He added that their discussions covered trade, military cooperation, and efforts to clear naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Downing Street also said Burnham reiterated the UK’s “unwavering commitment” to Ukraine during his conversation with President Zelenskyy, pledging continued support for Kyiv’s defence against Russia’s invasion.

Major Cabinet Shake-Up

Burnham moved swiftly to consolidate his authority by removing several ministers closely associated with his predecessor, including Rachel Reeves and David Lammy. Other ministers were reassigned to new portfolios, while several of Burnham’s close allies received promotions.

Pledge for a Stronger and Fairer Britain

Former Defence Secretary John Healey has been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, while Ed Miliband becomes Foreign Secretary. Senior Labour figure Angela Rayner returns to government, and Wes Streeting, who withdrew from the Labour leadership contest against Burnham, has been appointed Defence Secretary.

Shabana Mahmood has been reappointed Home Secretary and will continue overseeing the government’s tougher reforms on asylum and immigration.

Ten-Year Plan

In a brief address, Burnham announced that his government would introduce “a new plan for Britain—a 10-year plan,” although he did not provide further details.

His predecessor, Keir Starmer, had also spoken of a “decade of national renewal” before losing the Labour leadership to party MPs last month.

Burnham said his immediate priority is to ease financial pressures on households and help people cope with the rising cost of living. He indicated that the first measures under his economic agenda would be announced from Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, Starmer departed Downing Street with his wife, maintaining that Britain had become “stronger and fairer” during his two years in office.
