North Korea Condemns Japan’s Plan to Increase Defense Spending to Record Levels

Darwin, 22 July : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the country’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, and appointed Mykhailo Drapatyi as his replacement.
The decision came just days after the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. His removal triggered nationwide protests, with demonstrators taking to the streets for six consecutive days in the capital, Kyiv, before the unrest spread to other cities across Ukraine. The protests initially began in response to Fedorov’s dismissal, but calls soon emerged for Syrskyi to step down as well. Although reports of tensions between the two leaders were initially dismissed as speculation, they were later confirmed.
The 35-year-old Fedorov had earned widespread praise for bringing fresh momentum to the Defense Ministry, modernizing the armed forces, and promoting anti-corruption reforms. In contrast, the 60-year-old Syrskyi was viewed by many Ukrainians as a Soviet-style military commander who was reluctant to implement major reforms within the armed forces.
In recent weeks, disagreements between Fedorov and Syrskyi over the war with Russia became increasingly public. The dispute is widely seen as a key factor behind the defense minister’s dismissal and the protests that followed. Ultimately, after days of sustained demonstrations, President Zelensky also removed the army chief.
Syrskyi has been succeeded by the 43-year-old General Mykhailo Drapatyi, a popular and battle-tested military commander.
In a message posted on Facebook after assuming office, Drapatyi said, “I will carry out my responsibilities with full dedication, complete focus, and deep respect for those who are defending our country today.”
He also thanked his predecessor, saying, “I am grateful to General Syrskyi for his continued efforts to strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces. I grew up in this army.”
In a video message posted on social media on Tuesday night, President Zelensky also praised Syrskyi’s military leadership, particularly his crucial role in the successful defense of Kyiv during the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
