Egypt Rejects Report Blaming Iran for Damietta Port Attack

Darwin, 01 August: Egypt has rejected a news report that blamed Iran for the drone attack on the Port of Damietta.

On Friday (July 31), Egypt’s State Information Minister Diaa Rashwan said that no party should be held responsible before the investigation is completed. He stated that the relevant state authorities would officially announce the findings once the investigation is concluded.

He also said that the statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, denying any involvement in the attack, is being taken seriously. However, Egypt’s final position will depend on the outcome of the investigation.

On July 29, an unidentified drone attack at the Port of Damietta set two gas carriers on fire. Emergency services and firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, and no casualties were reported.

Later, The Wall Street Journal, citing two anonymous Egyptian officials, reported that Cairo was blaming Iran for the attack and viewed it as an attempt to further escalate the conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has denied the allegation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that Israel could be carrying out conspiracies and “false-flag” operations to undermine regional peace.
