Darwin, 01 August: Two oil tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz under the protection of U.S. forces came under attack by Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Friday (July 31). According to the IRGC, the vessels ignored its instructions, prompting the attack. Both tankers were forced to stop following the incident.
The IRGC also said that four other tankers immediately altered their course after the attack.
In a statement, the IRGC said, “Two tankers that violated the regulations were attacked and brought to a halt. Meanwhile, four other tankers quickly changed course and returned to their previous positions. The military said the vessels were attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz through a declared route under U.S. air protection.”
The Strait of Hormuz has become a major flashpoint in the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. Against this backdrop, U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with his Cabinet later on Friday to discuss the conflict and the impact of the war on rising commodity prices.
