‘Last Chance Before Beheading’: Trump Warns Iran

Darwin, 04 August: U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States is currently engaged in talks with Iran, despite Tehran’s firm denial. Trump said Iran now faces its “last chance before beheading” to reach an agreement.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump said he had decided to continue efforts to negotiate with Iran at the request of several regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated on Monday (August 3) that there are currently no negotiations taking place with Washington.

Responding to Tehran’s denial, Trump insisted, “We are talking right now.”

He added, “This is their last chance to sign a good deal. Before beheading, I want to give them what may be their final opportunity.”

According to Trump, one of the key issues under discussion is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He said the strategically important waterway could reopen very soon—possibly “as early as tomorrow.” However, he acknowledged that resolving the issue of Iran’s nuclear program and achieving nuclear disarmament could take more time.

Since the surprise military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, the two sides have remained at war. In the months leading up to the conflict, several rounds of diplomatic contacts alternately eased and intensified tensions.

More than five months into the war, Iran continues to demonstrate the ability to launch missile and drone attacks against U.S. and allied targets across the Middle East. The country also retains a stockpile of enriched uranium.

Trump’s stance toward Iran has shifted noticeably in recent days. Last week, he threatened Iran with “very severe” attacks, including possible strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure. However, on Saturday, he softened his position, saying that a “framework” for a potential agreement had been established.

Meanwhile, Tehran maintains that no talks with the United States are currently taking place.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that Tehran is instead holding discussions with Oman regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, and the ongoing disruption there has become one of the biggest obstacles to resolving the conflict.

After the collapse of the ceasefire, Iran reimposed restrictions in the strait, obstructing the movement of ships attempting to pass through. Commercial vessels have also reportedly come under attack.

Criticizing Iran’s actions, Trump accused Tehran of pursuing a “double policy.” In a social media post, he said that although Iran publicly and proudly denies negotiations, the two sides are in fact discussing ways to resolve the crisis.

Trump said the discussions are focused on resolving problems that, in his view, Iran has created over several decades.

He also referred to U.S. counter-blockade measures targeting Iranian ports, stating that nothing would be allowed into Iran without U.S. approval. According to Trump, no goods would enter the country until either an agreement is reached or Iran accepts what he described as “complete surrender.”

Before the war began, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was unrestricted. Iran now seeks to maintain control over the waterway and charge transit fees for vessels passing through it—a demand rejected by the United States.

Tehran insists that ships must use a designated route close to Iran’s coastline and has refused to permit alternative routes.

However, in an interview with Iranian state television on Sunday, Baghaei said that a maritime navigation agreement with Oman is close to completion. Oman lies on the opposite side of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Baghaei, both sides are close to agreeing on a mutually acceptable shipping route. He said the route would not be dictated solely by either the northern or southern side but would instead respect both countries’ sovereignty while safeguarding Iran’s national interests and security.

He also clarified that even if such an agreement is reached, it would not necessarily mean the Strait of Hormuz would be fully reopened.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that explosions were heard near an oil tanker off the coast of Oman on Sunday (August 3). However, the vessel and all crew members were reported safe.

Since the outbreak of the war, Trump has repeatedly identified Iran’s nuclear program as one of the principal causes of the conflict. On Monday, he reiterated that “Iran’s nuclear disarmament must happen.”

Western countries have long accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of its nuclear program. Tehran has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful and intended for civilian purposes.

Earlier, while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump claimed that both Iran and U.S. allies in the Middle East had urged him not to launch further attacks. He asserted that such an operation could have become the largest military strike since World War II.

Iranian media rejected Trump’s claim, insisting that Tehran had made no request for him to refrain from attacking Iran.

As a result, the United States and Iran remain far apart on both the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program. Trump’s warning of a “last chance” and Tehran’s continued denial of negotiations have added fresh uncertainty over the future of the war and the prospects for a diplomatic settlement.
