Massive Wildfires in Washington Burn More Than 700 Homes to Ashes

Washington wildfire2

Darwin, August 04: A massive wildfire has spread across 7,000 acres in the U.S. state of Washington. Three major wildfires are currently raging across the state, destroying more than 700 homes, businesses, and other structures. Due to the rapidly advancing flames, around 65,000 residents in the Spokane area have been evacuated to safer locations. As conditions continue to worsen, Governor Bob Ferguson has declared a state of emergency across Washington.

Dry weather and strong gusty winds have made it difficult for firefighters to contain the blazes. Nearly 8.2 square miles (about 21 square kilometers) have burned in and around Spokane, Washington’s second-largest city. At the same time, multiple wildfires are burning across several western U.S. states, with federal, state, and local authorities working together to combat the fires. Officials said more than 7,000 acres have been affected across Washington so far, and several fires, including those in Spokane, remain uncontained. Patients from the Spokane Veterans Affairs Hospital are also among those who have been evacuated.

Local video footage shows multiple buildings engulfed in flames, thick black smoke covering residential neighborhoods, and many homes completely destroyed, leaving only their chimneys standing. Officials fear that weather conditions are unlikely to improve significantly over the coming days.

At a press conference, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell said, “We are not out of danger yet. The next few days will be extremely difficult.”

Beyond Spokane, firefighters have been battling wildfires for a tenth consecutive day in western Idaho and eastern Oregon, using bulldozers and helicopters to contain the flames. Around 525 square miles (approximately 1,360 square kilometers) of grassland have already burned. The region, known for its livestock ranches, has more than 700 homes and nearly 800 additional structures under threat.

Weather forecasts indicate that dry and sunny conditions will persist throughout the week, with temperatures expected to exceed 90°F (32°C) on Wednesday.

Officials believe the fires were likely sparked by lightning strikes. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Weather Service has issued air quality alerts for eastern Washington, eastern Oregon, western and central Idaho, and western Montana. It has also issued high wildfire risk warnings for parts of Utah, Montana, and western Nebraska, along with extreme heat warnings for southern Arizona, southern California, southern Nevada, and northern Montana.

Currently, the Old Trails Fire, Fairview Fire, and Meadowview Fire are the three major active wildfires in the Spokane area. Air quality alerts remain in effect across the state due to widespread smoke.

In response to the worsening situation, Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency on Saturday. The National Weather Service has also issued a Special Wildfire Warning for eastern Washington, describing conditions as “extremely dangerous.”
