India Celebrates 80th Independence Day, Marks 79 Years of Freedom

India Independent day

Darwin, August 15: Today, August 15, marks India’s Independence Day. As every year, the day is set to be observed across India with due solemnity and grandeur. The special occasion will be celebrated through the hoisting of the national flag, patriotic songs and the traditional grand ceremony at the Red Fort. However, one question is on the minds of many this year: Is the 2026 celebration India’s 79th Independence Day or its 80th?

Although there is some confusion over the calculation, the matter is actually quite clear. Depending on the method of counting, both answers are correct. Independent India celebrated its first Independence Day on August 15, 1947. Therefore, in terms of the number of Independence Day celebrations, 2026 marks the 80th Independence Day. On the other hand, counting the completed years of independence from 1947 to 2026, India is completing 79 years of independence. Simply put, this year marks 79 years of independence and the 80th Independence Day.

At midnight on August 15, 1947, British colonial rule came to an end. Independent India stepped into a new dawn. Just before independence, then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his historic “Tryst with Destiny” speech before the Constituent Assembly, which remains an enduring part of history.

India’s independence did not come overnight. After decades of sustained struggle, including the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, various mass movements, and the imprisonment and sacrifices of numerous armed revolutionaries, the country finally broke free from British rule.

Two special themes have been selected for the 2026 Independence Day celebrations: marking 150 years of “Vande Mataram” and highlighting the historical significance of the national song to the people of India; and inspiring the younger generation to build a fully developed India by 2047.

As part of the celebrations, the nationwide “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign is being observed from August 9 through August 17. Launched in 2022 during the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the initiative aims to encourage citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes.

Following tradition, the main Independence Day ceremony will once again be held at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi. The Prime Minister of India will hoist the national flag, receive the Guard of Honour from the armed forces and address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

As India stands on the threshold of eight decades of independence, the day is more than just a ceremonial holiday. It is an occasion to honour the sacrifices and struggles of the past while reaffirming the commitment to building a new India for the future.
