Darwin, September 03 : The Iranian rial has plunged to a record low, with one US dollar now fetching around 2.2 million Iranian rials, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
The exchange rate was recorded by two websites tracking Iran’s free-market currency rates following the renewed escalation in hostilities between Iran and the United States.
The rial has lost around 10 percent of its value in just one week. Since the war with the United States began in February and Washington imposed additional economic sanctions on Tehran, the Iranian currency has lost roughly half of its value, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, tensions in the region escalated further on Thursday as Iran launched another wave of drones and missiles toward Kuwait.
The Kuwaiti military said its air-defense systems were attempting to intercept the incoming drones and missiles at around 7:30 a.m. Bangladesh time. It warned residents that explosions could be heard during the interception operations and urged them not to panic and to move to safe locations.
The latest attack came after US strikes on several locations along Iran’s coast. In retaliation, Tehran targeted US facilities and infrastructure in Gulf countries, including Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq.
